LAKE FLATO: Architecture that Works with the Environment

SAN ANTONIO—The Aline B. Carter Foundation will welcome acclaimed San Antonio architect Ted Flato, FAIA, for a public lecture at the Maverick Carter House on Thursday, October 1, 2026 at 6 pm.

In 2024, San Antonio architects David Lake, FAIA, and Ted Flato, FAIA, received the architecture profession’s highest honor: the American Institute of Architects’ Gold Medal award. Past recipients include Frank Lloyd Wright, Frank Gehry (Canada), Santiago Calatrava (Spain), and other world-famous architects. The honor recognizes work that has had a lasting influence on the practice of architecture worldwide. Lake and Flato are the only Texas architects to receive the AIA top award in its 119-year history.

Since LAKE FLATO opened in a former San Antonio car dealership in 1984, their work has become known for buildings that are beautiful, sustainable, energy-efficient, and in harmony with the land and climate. After working for a giant of Texas architecture, O’Neil Ford, they absorbed his philosophy of using simple building forms and local materials while developing their own style of building elegant and environmentally responsible buildings.

The firm’s impressive San Antonio work includes the Pearl Brewery redevelopment, Confluence Park, and the San Antonio Federal Courthouse. LAKE FLATO is also collaborating with the Dallas-based Corgan firm on designing the San Antonio International Airport’s new Terminal C.

The lecture will take place inside the Maverick Carter House, a three-story limestone mansion designed in 1893 by Alfred Giles for William H. Maverick, son of Texas Declaration of Independence signer Samuel A. Maverick. Later, H.C. Carter, then president of the Texas Bar, purchased the home in 1914. All furnishings are original to the Carter family. Guests will have an opportunity to tour the historic home following the program.

Location and Parking: The Maverick Carter House is located at 119 Taylor St., which is near the Tobin Center (115 Auditorium Circle). Parking is available in the Tobin Garage (227 4th St.) through LAZ Parking (lazparking.com). There is also a surface parking lot south of the house on Taylor St.
